- <p> ACQUITTED. John Gotti, 49, reputed boss of the Gambino
- crime family, the largest of New York's Mafia clans; of assault
- and conspiracy charges in an alleged 1986 plot to shoot a union
- official; in New York City. Prosecutors claimed Gotti arranged
- the shooting because the official ordered thugs to wreck a
- mob-run Manhattan eatery that was being built with nonunion
- labor. Because of his two prior convictions, the "Dapper Don"
- would have faced 25 years to life in prison as a persistent
- felon.
