  17. crime family, the largest of New York's Mafia clans; of assault
  18. and conspiracy charges in an alleged 1986 plot to shoot a union
  19. official; in New York City. Prosecutors claimed Gotti arranged
  20. the shooting because the official ordered thugs to wreck a
  21. mob-run Manhattan eatery that was being built with nonunion
  22. labor. Because of his two prior convictions, the "Dapper Don"
  23. would have faced 25 years to life in prison as a persistent
  24. felon.
